Why burlesque works
The theme that
teaches swagger.
Burlesque is the quiet overachiever of our hen party dance classes in Plymouth. On paper it's a dance style; in practice it's an hour-long confidence lesson dressed in vintage glamour. The moves themselves are simple — a slow strut, a shoulder roll, a glance over the shoulder held one beat longer than feels natural — but strung together they change how a whole room carries itself.
And to be clear: our version is pure old-Hollywood theatre. Nothing comes off, nothing risqué is expected of anyone, and the humour matters as much as the glamour — think Marilyn's walk crossed with your funniest friend's eyebrow. Groups drawn to this era of showmanship often shortlist Chicago too, all bowler-hat jazz and razzle dazzle, while hens after a proper strength workout alongside the sass sometimes graduate to our Pole Dancing theme.
It suits smaller, closer groups especially well — the do's where everyone knows everyone and the laughter is already easy. We hire a private studio in the heart of the city so there's no audience beyond your own party, and afterwards the Hoe is right there for wind-blown glamour shots against the sea. Several burlesque graduates have since turned up at our weekly dance classes in Plymouth, shoulders back, chins up, entirely transformed.

Hour by hour
How the burlesque
hour unwinds.
We begin with posture and the walk — because in burlesque, crossing a room is choreography. The pace stays deliberately unhurried while the group finds the strut, the pause and the eyebrow, usually through tears of laughter.
From there the routine assembles: shoulder rolls, turns, a synchronised glance, all building to a finale where the hens frame the bride for one held, film-star pose. The ninety-minute session lets everything breathe — more polish, more comedy beats, and time to stage the final photograph properly.
Glances backward
In their own
words.
"I was nervous burlesque might be a bit much for our mixed group — it was elegant, hilarious and completely classy. My mother-in-law loved it most of all."
"The teacher taught us to strut like film stars and I have honestly kept the posture. Best hour of the hen weekend."
"Seven of us, one studio, endless laughing. The burlesque finale photo is now framed in the bride's hallway."
"Shoulders back, eyebrow up. Life-changing."
Burlesque specifics
Quick answers,
burlesque edition.
Honest answers to the questions groups ask before booking burlesque in Plymouth. Anything more delicate can go quietly into the enquiry notes.
01Is the burlesque class tasteful?
Completely. Ours is vintage, old-Hollywood burlesque — struts, posture and playful glances, with nothing removed and nothing risqué expected of anyone. Grans and mothers-in-law regularly join in and regularly steal the show.
02What should we wear — do you provide boas or gloves?
We don't supply boas, gloves or any props or costumes, so anything like that needs to come with you — and it's entirely optional. Most groups wear leggings or dresses they can move in, with heels welcome but never required.
03Is it suitable for total beginners?
Ideal for them, in fact. Burlesque is slow and deliberate, so there's no fast footwork to trip over — it rewards timing and cheek rather than technique, and every group has those in abundance.
04Which songs soundtrack the Burlesque hour?
Smoky vintage numbers and big-band swagger, with the odd modern track that carries the same attitude. If the bride has a favourite that fits the mood, mention it when you enquire and we'll try to build around it.
05Will the bride be front and centre in the Burlesque routine?
Naturally — the finale is staged around her, with the group framing her for a held film-star pose. If she'd enjoy a short walk-down of her own first, we'll choreograph one to exactly the level of spotlight she wants.
06Where do we turn up for a Burlesque hen party?
In a studio we hire in Plymouth city centre — fully private, just your group and your teacher, no onlookers. The exact venue is confirmed at booking, or if your accommodation offers enough floor space, we can bring the session there.
